Rafting the New River in West Virginia!
The New River, in West Virginia, offers different rafting trips throughout the whitewater season. Appalachian Wildwaters white water rafting on the Lower New River is a trip that is taken on 15 miles of the New River Gorge. In a standard 10 man raft this whitewater rafting trip will cover rapids from Class I to Class V. Our starting point is the town of Thurmond. Thurmond was once a prosperous town during the start of coal mining. Today, much of Thurmond is owned by the National Park Service.
Rafting the Lower New River Gorge takes you right underneath the world famous New River Gorge Bridge, the second longest steel arch bridge. The New River Gorge Bridge was completed in 1978. It soars 876 feet above the rugged rapids of the New River in WV and is considered the second tallest bridge in the United States.
The Upper New River whitewater rafting trip that is run by Appalachian Wildwaters, covers 13 miles of the New River Gorge. This rafting trip is typically taken in ducks, single person crafts that resemble inflatable kayaks. The starting point of this trip is a town called Prince. Prince Depot, decorated in Art Deco style, though formally opened in June of 1946 still serves as a passenger stop for Amtrak.
